    April 1997 –November 1999
Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, Farm Equipment Sector, Mumbai
Designation: Engineer III (Assistant Manager / CAE, R & D)
PROJECT: Tractor Stability & Finite Element Analysis of
Rear trailer tow hitch bracket and frontal bumper.
    BRIEF DETAILS OF THE PROJECT:
 Derived the eqns. governing the stability of tractors for haulage and developed a variety of user friendly `C’ programs for analyzing the longitudinal stability of tractors for finding out the critical gradeability and haulage limits with prediction of weight transfer, trailer hitch reactions, stabilizing and unstabilizing moment on the tractor and the stability safety factor. The inputs to the program were- tyre soil conditions (soil cone penetration index, tyre properties and tyre mobility number), coefficient of traction and rolling resistance along with the 2- W/ 4-W trailer data for haulage.
 Optimized the location of trailer tow hitch location for maximum of traction and stability.
 Compared the stability performance (front end lifting)characteristics of several 45 hp pto tractors such as M & M 575 DI,M & M 585 DI, SWARAJ 855 and SAME GREAVES 503, FORD 5630, STEYR BRAHMA 955, JOHN DEERE 5120, TAFE MF- 245 etc. and found out the root causes of front end lifting problem.
 Found out the optima of c.g. location of the tractor for maximum gradeability and haulage through another self- developed optimization algorithm.
     Stability Calculations for existing M & M tractor models M & M 225 DI , 255 DI, 265 DI, B- 275DI, 365 DI, 475 DI, UPG – 50, IDAM 18 hp pto and Mahindra’s 4-Wheel Drive tractor along with M & M’s US export models 5005 DI, 4505 DI, 4005 DI were performed.
 Played leading role in solving the front end lifting problem of Mahindra tractors through actual field visits, design of front weight ballasts for good stability characteristics.
 Prepared a Tractor Database on the attractive and stability performance for haulage.
 The design of the rear trailer tow hitch was modified from a fixed to an adjustable one for 4-W and 2-W trailers. The modified design included a bracket sliding on a rail with holes through which the required height was obtained. A Finite Element analysis of the bracket with bolt preloads and the loads due to haulage was performed. Also the bracket was checked for its endurance with FEMFAT software.
 An addition of front ballast (apart from the standard ballast of 70 kg.) amounting to about 150 kg. was obtained through the design of a solid frontal bumper ( which prevents loads coming on the tractor components from frontal impact) giving the tractor a better stability and at the same time retaining its traction.
    10. The final design of the rear trailer tow hitch bracket and the frontal bumper were checked for critical stress locations and fatigue life and endurance safety factors using SDRC IDEAS, MSC NASTRAN and FEMFAT .

    ACTUAL OUTCOME OF THE PROJECT:
Based on the several computations and comparisons of Mahindra & competitor tractors, a frontal addition of ballast weights of 150 kg in the form of frontal bumper and an adjustable rear tow hitch were designed and the tractors were tested for their gradeability and haulage and the results were found to be successful.

Typical projects in the period April 1997 – MAY 1998
Finite Element Analyses of Tractor 3 point linkage components such as top link, lift rod, hydraulic cylinder, connecting rod, rocker arm and lower link, gear shifter fork analysis etc.
